The Warehouse, a seven-story 98,000-square-foot historic building expansion designed by New York-based Morris Adjmi Architects is officially ready for occupancy. Due to the pandemic, the developer will be hosting a series of virtual tours of The Warehouse to supplement a traditional launch event.
The building was formerly a four-story textile facility for the Haddad family’s Carolina Manufacturing Company. James Haddad, Principal of Elijah Equities, the developer and owner of the building, said in a statement: “Being such an integral part of my childhood, it was important to me to preserve the original structure, have it flourish and appreciated by upcoming generations, but also to shepherd it into the modern era with a new aesthetically handsome addition.”
Morris Adjmi Architects were tasked with reimagining the structure. The architects captured Haddad’s vision by preserving the building’s original character and introducing a contemporary and bold addition with a generous treatment of glazing and outdoor space that overlooks the High Line and Hudson River.
“As a practice founded upon the importance of contextual design, we continuously strive to bridge the past and present. In that sense, The Warehouse is a quintessential project for our firm; a culmination of best efforts and lessons learned from some of our earlier, most successful, adaptive reuse projects such as Samsung 837 in the Meatpacking District and the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg,” said Adjmi in a statement. “The goal was to maintain the historic integrity of the original structure while creating an environment inspired by innovative technology and materials, designed to support a modern way of living and working.”
